Jan Tichy: Installation no. 29 (Neues Rathaus- New Town Hall), curated by Julia Draganovic and Barbara Kaesbohrer, was a site-specific installation by Jan Tichy at Kunsthalle Osnabrück, which is located in a former cloister with a gothic church from the 12th century. Tichy’s exhibition referred to Germany’s increasing influx of new citizens-to-be, the politics of welcoming and exclusion that results from that, and the question of how to create an inclusive though extremely heterogeneous society.
The title of the show refers to a German fairy tale about the citizens of Schilda which built a new town hall, but forgot the windows. In order to bring light into the town hall, they filled buckets and bags with light.

For the show Tichy projected white circles and rectangles on the vaults of the ceiling. Due to the web-like shape of the cross-vaults, the viewer saw the pattern of projections differently from various locations within the space. Tichy has chosen the circle and the rectangle as they are central to the history of light projection – the circular lens and the rectangular screen – but even without this reference they represent the most perfect and basic forms of human life.
