The 15th edition of Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal, What Does the Image Stand For?, probes the concept of photographic evidence and features work that questions the status of the photograph as a recording of the real, while examining fantastical and sublimated realities. The Biennale includes works by Matan Mittwoch and Moshe Ninio, with both artists exhibiting their work in Canada for the first time; for Mittwoch it will be his first show in North America. Ninio’s work will be presented in a group exhibition alongside pieces by artists including Abdel Abdessemed, Taryn Simon and Latoya Ruby-Frazier. Ninio’s work questions the social and political efficacy of the image, by focusing on culturally specific historical events. Mittwoch will present a solo exhibition including large format abstract prints that explore the aesthetic/material qualities of the post-photographic image.
